15 Common Mistakes Found on Applications by Dr. Susan Johnson

1. Make sure each field is completed.

2. If questions are not applicable, enter “NA”.

3. Speak to the minimum qualifications and preferred experience, including the KSA’s and essential duties and responsibilities.  Read the entire posting.

4. Do not use the word “I”.

5. Give yourself time to complete it in one sitting.

6. Save often.

7. Start from your present job and work backwards.   Current job should be in present tense – past jobs, use past tense verbs.

8. Save a copy of the state application to update for each new posting, including the copy of the advertised posting.

9. Check your spelling.

10. Check your employment dates.

11. Initial screen is based on the information provided in the state application only.  Qualifications must be stated.

12. Print in black ink or type (non-NEOGOV applications)

13. Make sure your employment contact information is complete.

14. Have copies of your official college transcripts / certifications available for the interview.

15. Resumes will not be accepted.

16. Do no lie (obviously).

Dr. Susan Johnson is the Organizational Development Manager for the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. A proven leader and motivator, Dr. Johnson has held several high level management positions in state government.

Dr. Johnson’s vast professional experience includes serving as Associate Commissioner of the Office of the Consumer Support and Workforce Services and Office of the Ombudsman for the Health and Human Services Commission. She served as a Staff Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner of the Texas Department of Human Services, Training Manager for the Texas Department of Transportation and Director of Program Planning for the Health and Human Services Policy Council in the Office of the Governor.

Dr. Johnson holds an undergraduate degree from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, a Master of Arts in Managing Human Resources Development Leadership from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Ph.D. in Urban Higher Education from Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi. Dr. Johnson is a graduate of Leadership Austin, Leadership Texas and Leadership America. She has participated in programs offered by the Governor’s Center for Management Development (GCMD) and is also a Certified Facilitator, Certified Mediator, and holds a Teaching Certification (Life).

Dr. Johnson is a passionate educator who encourages and champions these pursuits in her employees as wells as throughout the community. In addition to serving as an adjunct professor for Concordia University and Texas State University, Dr. Johnson is an engaged member of the Austin Chapter of Links, Inc., Executive Women in Texas Government, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and has been a docent for the Governor’s Mansion since 1985.

Dr. Susan Johnson is married, has two daughters and a handsome grandson.
